Albus Health (registered as ‘BreatheOx Limited’) is a medical technology spinout company from the University of Oxford that develops intelligent remote monitoring systems. Within three years of forming, we have won several innovation awards, raised nearly £3 million in funding and commercialised our first product through a contract to supply to one of the world’s largest pharma companies in the respiratory space.

What do we do and why do we do it?

Chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD are common, affecting a billion people worldwide, and are some of the leading causes of death and disability. Several billion dollars are spent each year into research and clinical trials in these conditions. However, the best tools available to monitor symptoms at home are subjective or require active engagement from the users, leading to very poor adherence and data quality. Lack of reliable tools leads to slower, costlier, and inefficient research, as well as hundreds of millions of hospital admissions which could be prevented through efficient symptom monitoring at home.


Albus Home RD, our first product, is an award-winning device that remotely monitors symptoms without anyone having to do or wear anything. With our proprietary algorithms, this enables the collection of continuous and objective data when people are at home without requiring any input or action. Being passive and plug-and-play, it is suitable for people of all ages, regardless of their technical ability or location. Moreover, it does not need any contact between two people or between the user and the device, making it ideal for the post-Covid world! Our product has exciting applications in clinical trials, and through the use of predictive analytics, in the prevention of respiratory emergencies such as asthma attacks.


Who are we?


Our team comprises industry-leading clinical, technical, and commercial experts, including the head of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Oxford, globally renowned respiratory researchers, the head of Computational Intelligence and Biomonitoring Lab at Oxford, and the former CEO of a medical technology unicorn. What have we done so far?


We spun out of Oxford in 2017 and have since won 3 innovation awards (InnovateUK) funded by the UK government as well as the AI in Health and Care Award announced by the Secretary of State for Health and Care at the London Tech Week 2020. We commercialised our first product in 2019 to help pharmaceutical companies collect objective data in their clinical trials and secured a contract to supply our technology to a clinical study by one of the world’s largest pharma companies in the respiratory space.


What’s in it for you?

We are looking for a full-time Software Engineer to join us in our offices in central Oxford (untill and unless we are required to work from home). You will be at the forefront of product development and growth, working across a range of aspects from ideation and development to deployment and scaling. Working in a young medtech start-up means that you will work directly with an exciting team of engineers, computer scientists, doctors and researchers who are passionate about solving one of the most urgent unmet needs in healthcare.


What will you be doing as a Research Engineer?


As a Research Engineer, you will work on Albus Health’s research and analytics platform, deploying ML algorithms and building robust data analysis pipelines. As part of an interdisciplinary R&D team, you will work in close collaboration with machine learning scientists, clinicians and software engineers. You will translate cutting edge algorithms into reliable user friendly software and help with algorithm validation. You will work at the intersection of machine learning, biomedical signal processing, software engineering and IoT. These contributions will drive our mission at its most actionable and early stages.

  • Work at the intersection of machine learning research, software engineering and physiological data analysis

  • Lead the development of Albus Health’s research framework and internal tools

  • Participate in cutting edge research in statistical modeling and inference of remote symptom monitoring

  • Build for significant growth and scaling challenges as we transition from research to product development

  • Engineer robust and reproducible data pipelines that enable remote symptom monitoring

  • Ensure the reliability and scalability of our ML platform

  • Develop software and workflows that support a long term vision for ML research and production

  • Enable data driven science discoveries in respiratory research and healthcare

In the role, you will be guided by advisors who are leaders in their field. While your responsibilities will be on the technical and product side, you will have the opportunity to see the commercial and business aspects of growing an early-stage startup through direct interactions with the CEO and management team.


What is the background or experience we are looking for?



  • 2+ years industry experience in software development for data analytics or research teams, writing production code

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related fields

  • Languages/platforms (high proficiency) - MATLAB, Python

  • Expertise designing, building and launching large-scale ML frameworks that supports the experimental needs of a research team

  • Experience in analyzing and troubleshooting data management systems

  • Thorough understanding of machine learning fundamentals, such as cross-validation, hyper-parameter search, model optimization and bias-variance tradeoff

  • Experience building and launching projects in a production software environment, including use of automated testing, version control, and deployment systems

  • A systematic problem-solving approach, effective communication skills and a strong desire to own and drive your work

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience working with a healthcare or medical technology startup

  • Productisation experience for products with significant machine learning, signal processing and electrical engineering components

  • Machine learning and data science packages, such as Sklearn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Jupyter, or Kubeflow

  • Experience with containerized cloud computing environments, such as Docker in GCP or AWS

  • Experience creating or deploying deep learning models using at least one of the following frameworks- TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras
